Coloured Sugar Cupcakes with Chocolate Monogram


For Lynnette’s birthday I did vanilla cupcakes rimmed in purple sugar topped with lavender buttercream and a white chocolate monograms brushed with lustre dust.  This was my first attempt at dying sugar and I used too much food colouring. (This picture is a little dark.) The sugar stayed wet, but it still tasted great.  I was really pleased with the way the monograms turned out.

The secret to a good monogram: Find a font you like online, print it out, cover it wax paper and trace right over the font. But do yourself a favour and put the whole thing on a cookie tray BEFORE you start piping.  Trust me these do not transfer well when wet.  Let them set in the fridge for about half an hour and they will handle okay. Letters that loop back on themselves or have a point of connection are sturdier but do yourself a favour and make extra.
